WHAT IS ADJUSTMENT DISORDER?

Avaliação psiquiátrica e psicológica — NeuroPsyque Lisboa

An excessive reaction to stress and change

Adjustment Disorder occurs when a person develops significant emotional or behavioural symptoms after a stressful event (divorce, unemployment, illness, change of life, etc.). Although suffering in the face of adversity is normal, in this disorder the reaction is disproportionate to the intensity of the event, surpassing natural adaptation mechanisms and seriously interfering with work, studies and social relationships.

Most common manifestations

  • Sadness and despair
Frequent crying, apathy, depressed mood and a feeling of profound inability to cope with the new reality.
  • Anxiety and Worry
Constant nervousness, agitation, tension and persistent fear about the future or the consequences of the event.
  • Behavioural changes
Severe social isolation, impulsivity, repeated absences from work or atypical interpersonal conflicts.
  • Physical Symptoms (Somatisation)
Severe insomnia, headaches, extreme fatigue or gastrointestinal disorders triggered by stress.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SEEKING CLINICAL SUPPORT

Suffering in the face of a major life change is normal, but when suffering paralyses you and prevents you from moving forward, professional support becomes essential. Ignoring an Adjustment Disorder doesn't make it go away. It often leads to the development of more serious, long-term psychiatric disorders such as Major Depression or Generalised Anxiety Disorder.

💡 Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but rather the first step towards developing resilience and adapting to a new phase of life in a healthy way.

At Clínica NeuroPsyque, we provide a safe and validating space. The focus is on psychotherapy (to process the event and create coping mechanisms) and, when necessary, transient and judicious pharmacological support to relieve acute anxiety and restore sleep, restoring emotional control and stability to the patient. The treatment of Insomnia, a comorbidity that is almost always present in Adjustment Disorder, is in itself a fundamental step towards an effective recovery of the body as a whole.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ's about Adjustment Disorder

When does suffering from a divorce or redundancy become a nuisance?
Suffering in the face of loss and change is completely normal. It becomes an Adjustment Disorder when the emotional reaction and the anxiety are clearly disproportionate to the severity of the event, lasting longer than expected, and causing a severe inability to work, study or maintain basic social relationships.
What is the difference between Adjustment Disorder and Depression?
Adjustment Disorder is always triggered by an identifiable and recent stressful event. If the event is resolved or the person adapts to it, the symptoms usually improve quickly. A Major Depression can arise for no obvious reason, has more severe symptoms, and doesn't get better just by solving an external problem. Even so, an untreated crisis can develop into depression.
How long does Adjustment Disorder last?
As a rule, symptoms appear within 3 months of the stressful event. If the event is one-off (such as a divorce or finalised redundancy), the symptoms should not persist for more than 6 months after the event or its aftermath has ended. If the triggering situation is chronic (such as a long-term illness), the disorder can also extend.
Do I need to take medication?
The primary and most effective long-term treatment is psychotherapy. Medication does not "cure" the adaptation problem or erase the event, but the psychiatrist can temporarily prescribe medication to relieve symptoms that block recovery, such as severe insomnia, panic attacks or extreme agitation.
Do only negative events cause this disturbance?
No. Major life changes considered positive by other people - such as having your first child, getting married, moving to a new house or getting a big promotion at work - bring pressures, new responsibilities and a loss of your old routine, which can deplete your ability to adapt and trigger the illness.
Is mourning the death of someone close included in the diagnosis of an adjustment disorder?
No. Mourning the death of a significant person is considered a separate process. When it evolves in a persistent, intense and disabling way, it falls under the diagnosis of prolonged bereavement (pathological bereavement). Adjustment disorder applies to other types of stressful life events and should not be used to describe grief reactions related to bereavement.
How can psychotherapy help in these cases?
Psychotherapy works to validate and identify the emotions generated by change, to process grief or loss and to build new healthy coping strategies (adaptation). It helps the person to restructure their perspective, recovering a sense of identity and agency in their own life.
Do I need a medical referral to book an appointment at NeuroPsyque?
