From Portugal to the world, José Padrão Mendes was born in Portugal but studied and specialised abroad.
He has studied, worked and volunteered on four different continents. By getting to know different realities and cultures, she has absorbed and learnt different ways of looking at life, and the medicine she practices reflects these experiences.
Zaragoza, Spain
Beginning of the journey. It was at Zaragoza's Faculty of Medicine that the first steps were taken in a personal and professional transformation, motivated by the dream of becoming a doctor. This journey was to be marked by challenges and the unpredictable.
Guatemala
Less than a year after the start of the journey, I had my first international volunteering experience in Yepocapa. An opportunity to learn through experience, but above all to contribute to a community that needed it so much. This experience would be the first of many.
Mumbai, India
Three years later, my love of medicine was growing, along with my desire to get to know other realities. A summer of volunteering in an orphanage, in one of the most different cultures in the world. A provocative experience, with a huge impact on the person and their professional future.
Bonn, Germany
Opportunity to study for a year in Germany. His interest in neurology and neuroscience was born. Here he also met the professor who would influence him and later invite him to return to pursue his speciality.
Homa Bay, Kenya
Another volunteering experience, this time building a school for girls in a region affected by HIV. A profoundly impactful human experience that revealed the fragility of life and the importance of optimism.
Tangier, Morocco
Increasingly prevalent in the health sector, the stay in Morocco helped people with physical and mental disabilities. A geography very close to Europe, with levels of care so far removed from what José was used to.
Nicaragua
First practical foray into medicine, including surgery. This second visit to the American continent would be an important step that would help shape the future.
São Paulo, Brazil
A scholarship allows for an internship at the prestigious Hospital das Clínicas at FMUSP, providing contact with cutting-edge medicine and an incredible diversity of clinical cases in a reference institution.
Cologne, Germany
A second six-month internship in Pulmonology, Neurosurgery and Paediatrics. Consolidation of knowledge and comparison of different clinical approaches.
Galway, Ireland
I specialised in Neurology after an unexpected invitation from a former professor. Even more unexpected was the sudden outbreak of a global pandemic. In this hospital, many hours were spent in intensive care during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lisbon, Portugal
After 15 years travelling the world, he wanted to give back to his country what he had done for it. With a wealth of experience in Neurology, Psychiatry, Neurocritical Care, among other areas, he decided to start an innovative project that will change the way we look at the brain and mind in Portugal: NeuroPsyque.
