But it does make the most of a <strong>an extraordinary feature of the brain<\/strong>: the ability to learn and to adapt.<\/p><h3>Behavioural training that begins with measurement<\/h3><p>The term \u201cneurofeedback\u201d may sound complicated, but the explanation given in the interview is straightforward:<\/p><blockquote><p><strong>\u201cUsing sensors placed on the scalp, we monitor the brain\u2019s electrical activity and convert this information into visual or auditory stimuli that the child sees on a screen. When the brain is functioning in a balanced way, the game or video progresses; when it becomes unbalanced, the stimulus is reduced.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><p>Sensors do not send signals to the brain: they simply read its activity.<\/p><p>\u00c9 <strong>the brain itself<\/strong> which receives feedback on how it is performing and learns through minor adjustments.<\/p><p>Jos\u00e9 Padr\u00e3o Mendes compares this process to learning <strong>to ride a bike<\/strong> \u2014 a simple illustration of a technique based on the brain\u2019s natural neuroplasticity.<\/p><p>A <strong>neuroplasticity<\/strong>, the possibility of \u201c<em>to shape<\/em>\u201d the brain and its behaviour, <strong>is at its peak<\/strong> during childhood and adolescence \u2014 this is why the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/neuropsiquiatria.pt\/en\/neurodesenvolvimento-criancas-e-jovens\/\">neurodevelopmental conditions in children and young people<\/a><\/strong> in a different way.<\/p><h3>What might change in our daily lives?<\/h3><p>The interview covers difficulties such as ADHD, anxiety, sleep disorders, learning difficulties and emotional regulation.<\/p><p>Rather than simply listing conditions, it shows how improved brain organisation can become apparent in a child\u2019s life:<\/p><blockquote><p><strong>\u201cTeachers and parents report improvements in reading, writing, working memory and the ability to follow instructions. When the brain is more stable, learning is no longer a struggle but becomes an opportunity.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><p>How are these results achieved? The doctor describes a protocol that begins with a clinical assessment and brain mapping, moves on to a personalised plan, and includes regular progress checks.<\/p><p>It also explains when the first changes might become apparent, how many sessions are usually required, and why family involvement influences the process.<\/p><h3>No shocks, no magic<\/h3><p>There are two myths that the conversation dispels outright. The first is that the equipment \u201cgives electric shocks\u201d: <strong>\u201cFalse. The device simply reads brain activity.\u201d<\/strong> The second is that the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/neuropsiquiatria.pt\/en\/neurofeedback-e-qeeg\/\">Neurofeedback<\/a><\/strong> It works like magic. The answer is just as clear: <strong>\u201cNo. It\u2019s science, training and consistency.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p>Straddling technological curiosity and parents\u2019 legitimate concerns, the interview provides an accessible explanation of safety, scientific evidence, the recommended age and possible integration with other therapies.<\/p><p>And it conveys an important message: <strong>\u201cI would say that they don\u2019t need to wait for the difficulties to get worse before taking action.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p>This text gives just a glimpse of the conversation.
